Communities In Schools of Southwest Pennsylvania was organized as a private nonprofit corporation in 1989. Services are provided to in-school and out-of-school youth at educational sites throughout Fayette, Greene, and Westmoreland Counties.

Teachers, principals, parents, friends, or self-referrals refer youth to CIS. CIS students include those with low academic attainment, school attendance issues, attitude and behavioral problems, juvenile court records, and unresolved social/emotional problems.

CIS uses a "whole family " approach. Parental involvement is vital to CIS through home visits, positive communication, parenting workshops, and human service referrals.
